World Trade Center bomber ‘Blind Sheikh’ dies in prison

The mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing has died in federal prison in North Carolina.

The death of Egyptian-born Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, 78, also known as the “the blind sheikh,” was confirmed by his daughter, Asmaa Abdel-Rahman, who tweeted in Arabic: “Allah has taken the soul of Sheikh Omar.”

Abdel-Rahman, leader of the militant Al-Gama’a al-Islamiya, had served more than 20 years of a life sentence for “seditious conspiracy” for planning to blow up numerous New York landmarks, including the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.

The militant cleric, who suffered from diabetes that blinded him as an infant, and coronary heart disease, died Saturday morning of “natural causes” at a federal prison hospital in Butner, North Carolina, said prison spokesman Greg Norton.

Six people were killed in the Feb. 26, 1993 truck bombing at the World Trade Center, which took place eight years before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks which killed thousands and brought the towers down.
