Is Your Congressman a Swamp Rat? Take the Test.
If your congressman voted to gut the Independent Ethics Office, there is a very strong chance that they are a swamp rat. After all the independent body was created in 2008 to investigate allegations of misconduct by lawmakers. Let us know what your congressman voted.
Under the ethics change pushed by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., the non-partisan Office of Congressional Ethics would fall under the control of the House Ethics Committee, run by lawmakers.
House Republicans voted 119-74 for the Goodlatte measure despite arguments from Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., against the change.
After Trump chimed in via Twitter, Republican’s changed their path: “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it … may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS,”
House Republican leaders pulled a proposal on Tuesday, that would have gutted its independent ethics panel, amid widespread criticism of the plan.
